  • het lijkt me uitvoerbaar

Hello,

For a modular lay-out I'm thinking about a US theme which contains a redelict coaling tower over the mainline.

I have seen various pictures of the remains of coaling towers over through going 2-3 tracks which seems to me to be mainline. I know about coaling facilities near yards and depots. But I have the impression that in the US there were coaling towers more or less over mainlines.

I'm I correct and if so, can somebody point me toward websites which contains info on how / where / why this was done.

The Delaware and Lackawanna had an "over the main" coaling tower at Groveland, NY, if you Google it you will find photos. I see an older wooden one posted on Flickr, it was later replaced by a concrete tower which I have photos of at home. Of course, they did not tie up the 2 track main to coal a loco, it covered additional tracks and also serviced pusher engines which worked Danville Hill to the east. John

I know a thing or two about operating steam locomotives, but this is mainly European based. UK had water throughs, Netherlands certainly not (to small) and neither did Germany (and France to my knowledge).

Point is that in Europa coaling was done at the points where the locomotives where exchanged / serviced. Most steamlocomotives could take coal for about a day running with them, or in general at least the crew was exhausted way before the coal was exhausted. There were some point where this was not true, but this was mainly at point where banking engines where used.

Watering was done frequently (most steam locomotives only carry water for 2-3 hours worth). So yes watering points of even track-pans or water through I have heard of.

I have no intention of remodelling an specific location or coaling tower, but I'm interested in the general set-up, so I hope for some pictures / links to information about the daily operations of such a mainline coaling tower.
•I have the impression that most of the remaining coaling towers stand over at least two tracks but more regularly over (original) four tracks.
•only the concrete coalbin and its support remains nowadays (on some locations also with the conveyor enclosing which fed the coalbin)
•I assume that there were at least watering point (and therefore a watertower, which likely has long gone now). If you have to wait for the tender to fill with coal you might as well take water
•I'm not sure about sanding, but hey, why not, so a drysand tower might have been there as well
•I wonder whether or not there would have been ash-pits. by the time you have gone through a whole tender of coal, your fire is likely to be not in the best of shapes, so cleaning your fire and emptying the ash-pan might be useful.

Of the above mentioned thing I assume everything other then the concrete coaling tower is gone. Demolishing the coaltower will take some time and why bother if you don't need the space. By the sound of it these "mid way coaling points" where sort of in the middle of nowhere. And concrete in a good form is more or less maintenance free.

When they where in use I assume it was some form of small industry.•coal in
•empty coal wagons out
•ash out?
•sand and other small items in.

So I would think in the original form there would have been a number of sidings and maybe even a small shed for servicing the shunt-engines.

I have not decided yet which stage of the coaling tower I would like to model. Unlikely when they where operation at full swing and more likely in their nowadays form with only the coaltower remaining, but with showing the consequences / space of the previous sidings.

So please correct me if I wrong in some (or all) of my assumptions and if somebody knows a link to how this mid-way coaling stations where operated: I would love to know.

I think your assumptions are mainly correct Paul, Groveland is certainly in a remote area on the DL&W for example, but there was a small engine house nearby and there would certainly have been coal cars in and empties out, and a water spout. I don't know the coal consumption figures for their locos, but my hunch is that the location was chosen for being a midpoint resupply location between major terminals, in this case Buffalo, NY and Scranton, PA for through freights, and as a by-product a location for the small helper fleet to re-fuel. Others probably know more. Good question though and an element not frequently modeled! John
