Inmiddels is het idee voor de tweede bak ook aan het rijpen.

in Amerika heb je op sommige plaatsen nog de resten staan van betonnen bekolingsinstallaties. Veelal staan die dus bij depots / werkplaatsen. Maar in Amerika had je op sommige plaatsen "in the middle of nowhere" een bekolingsinstallatie die dus over de hoofdsporen heen stonden. Hier bleven de (stoom)locs dus gewoon aan de trein gekoppeld, werden van kolen en water voorzien en gingen daarna weer door.

Daar deze betonnen constructies zeer degelijk en zwaar uitgevoerd waren zijn die dus niet makkelijk te slopen en zeker niet bij in gebruik zijnd spoor. Daar de betonnen constructie veelal geen of nauwelijks onderhoud nodig heft en niemand in de de weg staat, zijn een aantal van deze torens blijven staan. In de praktijk betekend dit dat (bijna) al het ijzerwerk van de torens is weggehaald en ook alle omliggende gebouwen. Het enige wat er over is, is het kale skelet van de coal tower en een aantal sporen. Veelal lagen de torens op plekken waar vroeger meer doorgaande sporen lagen, maar zijn er nu nog maar een of twee over.

Het idee moet nog wat rijpen, maar:

  • ik heb er zin in
  • het lijkt me uitvoerbaar

Ik heb nog geen idee in welke tijd ik e.a. ga plaatsen.
  • in gebruik (dwz met stoomlocs dus)
  • redelijk recent buiten gebruik (dwz, alles ligt er nog, maar is niet meer in gebruik)
  • hedendaags (dwz alleen het casco staat nog)

Misschien begin ik wel met het laatste en werk ik me langzaam omhoog

Hello,

For a modular lay-out I'm thinking about a US theme which contains a redelict coaling tower over the mainline.

I have seen various pictures of the remains of coaling towers over through going 2-3 tracks which seems to me to be mainline. I know about coaling facilities near yards and depots. But I have the impression that in the US there were coaling towers more or less over mainlines.

I'm I correct and if so, can somebody point me toward websites which contains info on how / where / why this was done.

The Delaware and Lackawanna had an "over the main" coaling tower at Groveland, NY, if you Google it you will find photos. I see an older wooden one posted on Flickr, it was later replaced by a concrete tower which I have photos of at home. Of course, they did not tie up the 2 track main to coal a loco, it covered additional tracks and also serviced pusher engines which worked Danville Hill to the east. John

I know a thing or two about operating steam locomotives, but this is mainly European based. UK had water throughs, Netherlands certainly not (to small) and neither did Germany (and France to my knowledge).

 Point is that in Europa coaling was done at the points where the locomotives where exchanged / serviced. Most steamlocomotives could take coal for about a day running with them, or in general at least the crew was exhausted way before the coal was exhausted. There were some point where this was not true, but this was mainly at point where banking engines where used.

 Watering was done frequently (most steam locomotives only carry water for 2-3 hours worth). So yes watering points of even track-pans or water through I have heard of.

 I have no intention of remodelling an specific location or coaling tower, but I'm interested in the general set-up, so I hope for some pictures / links to information about the daily operations of such a mainline coaling tower.
•I have the impression that most of the remaining coaling towers stand over at least two tracks but more regularly over (original) four tracks.
•only the concrete coalbin and its support remains nowadays (on some locations also with the conveyor enclosing which fed the coalbin)
•I assume that there were at least watering point (and therefore a watertower, which likely has long gone now). If you have to wait for the tender to fill with coal you might as well take water
•I'm not sure about sanding, but hey, why not, so a drysand tower might have been there as well
•I wonder whether or not there would have been ash-pits. by the time you have gone through a whole tender of coal, your fire is likely to be not in the best of shapes, so cleaning your fire and emptying the ash-pan might be useful.

 Of the above mentioned thing I assume everything other then the concrete coaling tower is gone. Demolishing the coaltower will take some time and why bother if you don't need the space. By the sound of it these "mid way coaling points" where sort of in the middle of nowhere. And concrete in a good form is more or less maintenance free.

 When they where in use I assume it was some form of small industry.•coal in
•empty coal wagons out
•ash out?
•sand and other small items in.

 So I would think in the original form there would have been a number of sidings and maybe even a small shed for servicing the shunt-engines.

 I have not decided yet which stage of the coaling tower I would like to model. Unlikely when they where operation at full swing and more likely in their nowadays form with only the coaltower remaining, but with showing the consequences / space of the previous sidings.

 So please correct me if I wrong in some (or all) of my assumptions and if somebody knows a link to how this mid-way coaling stations where operated: I would love to know.

I think your assumptions are mainly correct Paul, Groveland is certainly in a remote area on the DL&W for example, but there was a small engine house nearby and there would certainly have been coal cars in and empties out, and a water spout. I don't know the coal consumption figures for their locos, but my hunch is that the location was chosen for being a midpoint resupply location between major terminals, in this case Buffalo, NY and Scranton, PA for through freights, and as a by-product a location for the small helper fleet to re-fuel. Others probably know more. Good question though and an element not frequently modeled! John

Ik ben me terdege bewust dat ik nu eigenlijk ga lopen te verkondigen dat ik aan twee bakken tegelijkertijd wil beginnen, namelijk een NL baan en een USA baan.

Toch denk ik dat het haalbaar is:

Beide banen wil ik relatief simpel houden:

  • enkel doorgaande sporen
  • de USA baan plan ik in een redelijk afgelegen locatie
  • een dal of bos
  • en enkel de bekolingsinstallatie
  • eerst de sporen er goed in
  • de scenery eerst in enkel in de vorm / silhouetten weergeven, dwz bomen van sponsjes en scenery in grof karton
  • per keer een deel project aanpakken en dat (al dan niet op een beurs tijdens demobouwen) oplossen aanpakken
  • kortom een baan waarop gereden kan worden en waar iedere keer "work in progress" te zien is

USA zou ik overigens hedendaags kiezen. Mooi contrast tussen oude betonnen constructies en grote moderne diesels.

De Norfolk and Western had ook ergens zo'n coaling tower. Ooit bij Eisenbahnkurier een DVD over de J class locomotieven, waar als ik het me goed herinner ergens een opname van zo'n coaling tower zit. De loc werd aan de trein van nieuwe kolen voorzien. Ik kan nu zo gauw niet even die DVD afspelen. Kan van de week wel even kijken of ik tijd heb als je wilt, om te achterhalen waar het was.
