Replicabouw PRR T1 in de VS

Je kunt vinden van de VS wat je wil, maar ze pakken zaken wel groots aan. Ook nu weer, met de aangekondigde bouw van een replica van een T1 van de Pennsylvania Rail Road. Wat mij betreft een van de fraaist vormgegeven stomers ooit.

Navraag leert dat de T1 trust de Lego-bouwtekeningen en onderdelenlijsten gaat verkopen, zodat je zelf de benodigde Lego kunt bestellen.

De S1 is ook wel een fraai staaltje Loewy-vormgeving

Nah, S1 is wel een leuk ding maar wat te mooi eigenlijk. Een lekker groezelige T1 is wel zo'n fijn grimmig apparaat om te zien.

Thanks for contacting the T1 Trust about the Lego 5550 T1 Building instructions.   I've been working with them on the project and wanted to follow-up with you to answer your questions.

As you probably guess from the Facebook post,  T1 Trust is getting close to releasing the plans, we are in the process of working out a few final details, mostly related to the decals/sticker files that will be provided with the instructions.   Hopefully we can get that taken care of in the next few weeks.

Once ready, the T1 Trust will be offering a build packet for donations of $55.50.   The build packet will include the following:
1) Parts list - what kind of bricks are needed, how many and links to the world's largest online Lego marketplace (Bricklinks)
2) FAQ - a series of frequently asked questions about the Lego T1
3) Step-by-step build instructions for the locomotive and the tender
4) A sticker file that includes images for the keystone, 5550 cab number and PENNSYLVANIA lettering (we are testing which kind(s) of paper works best for printing these off so we can share that insight with the instructions
5) Up to an hour of virtual help during the build process (this would be via email or Skype with me)

The donation does NOT include the price of the Legos, and if you have never built a custom Lego project, you would be surprised at how quickly those bricks add up in price!    I have built 2 T1's so far, one for myself and a second for the T1 Trust.    Costs depend on a number of things and I expect that will probably be the most commonly asked question.

WHERE SHOULD I START?

This spreadsheet & the build instruction files include just about everything you need to get started.   There main decision to think about before you start aqcuiring Legos is whether you want to build a static display T1 or one that will be powered and can run on Lego Tracks.  The main difference is if you want a powered T1, you will need to aqcuire a few more parts along with some track to run the T1.   There will also be some additional steps to fit the powered components into the tender.  Yup, that's right, the tender.  The Lego T1 is actually driven by the tender!


Once you decide on your set-up, the next thing to do is to start acquiring the required Legos.  This workbook has been set-up with hyperlinks that will direct you to where you can purchase the specific peices.  Most of the purchases will be through a site called Bricklinks.   The hyperlinks will take you to a page on the Bricklink site that shows a list of vendors selling that particular part.   You can filter based on location (i.e. show USA based vendors only) and sort by things such as LOWEST PRICE or HIGHEST QTY.   Each vendor has their own policy on minimum orders.  Many have no minimum orders (but they either tend to have limited stock or higher prices).   Shipping and handling will vary depending on your location, but expect to pay at least $3 to $5 per order.    That being the case, it sometimes makes more sense to pay a little more per brick and save on shipping and handling.    It is also advantageous to try and get as many parts from a single vendor as you can to save on shipping (assuming you can find a vendor with reasonable pricing).


You can add a column on the worksheets that shows how many pieces you have purchased.  That is helpful as you will likely need to source Legos from multiple vendors to get everything you need.   

WHERE SHOULD I GET MY LEGOS?

There are a number of places where you can source Legos, but the easiest and cheapest is an online marketplace known as bricklink.  It is a website where buyers and sellers go to buy and sell specific types of legos.   Unfortunately, there is no simple one stop shopping.    You will need to purchase Legos from multiple places in order to get the full set required to build the T1.   

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

It depends.  Prices are in part set by individual sellers and vary quite a bit.  It seems that vendors that tend to have A LOT in stock also tend to have HIGHER prices.   Prices for individual pieces vary, but using costs on Bricklink.com from early 2016, a fully powered, functional T1 locomotive (including 2 PF motors, IR reciever,  powerblock, & controller) would cost about $330 USD + shipping & handling costs.   Remember that you will be making purchases from multiple vendors, and the more vendors you purchase from, the higher the shipping costs.  Sometimes you can get better prices when you shop from smaller vendors, but it will require more purchases which equates to higher shipping costs.  You need to factor that in when you are deciding where to buy.


If you've never built a custom Lego train before, it seems like a lot, but I have done a few Lego projects and quickly realized it isn't a cheap hobby.   I can also say that the T1 model is one of the best looking Lego trains I have seen.  It is amazing.  AND it runs which is even cooler!

As you can see/hear, I managed to fit a small bluetooth speaker in the cab which effectively serves as a sound card.  Makes the locomotive even cooler.
