MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE HIT BY THREE TOWING VESSELS IN THREE DAYS

Four barges sunk Tuesday morning in the Mississippi River after they hit the U.S. 80 railroad bridge near Vicksburg, authorities said. Twenty-two barges carrying coal were being pushed by the Ron W. Callegan when the collision happened about 8:40 a.m., authorities said. The railroad bridge is closed until engineers can assess the damage, The Vicksburg Post reported. The loose barges had been secured by Tuesday afternoon. The Mississippi River is above flood stage in Vicksburg and the level is rising. Watch the video HERE (Source: Marex)

ANOTHER BRIDGE ALLISION AT HELENA HIGHWAY 49 BRIDGE
Separately, a towboat pushing chemical barges allided with the Highway 49 bridge over the

Mississippi in Helena, Arkansas on Monday night, Coast Guard authorities said, briefly closing a section of the river to traffic. The bridge was also closed for inspection but no damage was found; it was reopened early on Tuesday. Four barges broke away in the Helena incident, the USCG said, and all were secured by the early hours of Tuesday morning. Two barges containing several million gallons of denatured alcohol were damaged and taking on water, but a USCG spokesman said that no pollution had occurred and the barges would be emptied for safety. No injuries were reported. The Coast Guard identified the towboat in the Helena incident as the SCF Liquids vessel Cynthia G. Esper. The USCG also announced that, in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers, it has placed an AIS virtual aid to navigation to mark the wreck site of the sunken towboat William Strait until flood waters recede enough to salvage the vessel. “The multiagency collaboration on e-Navigation and AIS began over 10 years ago, and in 17 years of federal service, it has be one of the most successful partnerships in which I have had the pleasure to work,” said Michael F. Winkler, a research hydraulic engineer with the Corps. “The effort to have a Virtual ATON mark the sunken vessel went from general discussion to successful transmission in just over 48 hours.” Authorities with the U.S. Coast Guard Eighth District are investigating two barge allisions on the Mississippi as high water levels hamper shipping and close navigation on some Western Rivers routes. A third towboat has allided with the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge in as many days as floodwaters continue to impact shipping on the Mississippi River. The latest incident occurred Thursday when a barge being pushed by towing vessel Robert D. Byrd struck the bridge at about approximately 7:44 a.m. The string of incidents began Tuesday when the towing vessel Ron W. Callegan with 22 barges struck the Vicksburg Railroad Bridge, causing nine barges to break free. Two of the barges containing coal later sank. On Wednesday, another towing vessel, the Inez Andreas, also allided
with the bridge, causing two barges to break free, one of which sank. The latest update by National Weather Service’s Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service on Thursday said the Mississippi River at Vicksburg was at 49.98 feet, almost seven feet above flood stage. The Coast Guard said Thursday that because of the three incidents in three days, it is currently evaluating additional navigation safety measures in order to reduce the potential for future accidents. The Mississippi River remains open to traffic in the area. An update from the Coast Guard on Monday said that high water advisory remained in place on the Lower Mississippi River from mile marker 869, near Caruthersville, Missouri, to mile marker 303 near Natchez, Mississippi, due to recent flooding in the midwest. The Vicksburg Railroad bridge is located at mile marker 435.8 on the Mississippi River near Vicksburg. The bridge is to remain closed until a safety inspection is completed by the Vicksburg Bridge Commission and the State of Mississippi, the Coast Guard said. The causes of all three incidents are under investigation. (Source: gCaptain)

Helaas zijn er na deze incidenten alweer drie aanvaringen met spoorbruggen geweest. Gaat goed daar!!!
