Hi there Erwin.
About wich model do we talk, the Di5 or El 10.

Hello
Every Märklin loko should have some electronical device in it. This is needed for driving direction and in your case also for the DC engine in the loco.
If there is no such device in your loco then you probably have a trix model equipped wit a pickup shoe.
To make this suitable for AC use you will have to fit (for example) a decoder.

Erwin,
It is possible that your electric shunting loc has a switch at the bottom.
Can you flip the switch??
With the switch, you can choose between :
- get power from the contact strip between the rails
Or
- get the power from the overhead line
If the switch is in the position to get the power from the overhead line, but there is no overhead line the loc doesn't work
I hope that you understand what I wrote
